Follow-Up... HEARTS FOR HOSPICE Cindy Suffel-Marchbank, Chairperson
On behalf of the Abbotsford Hospice Society, the Hearts for Hospice Committee wishes to thank
all of the generous donors and sponsors who made this year's Hearts for Hospice Benefit possible.
This year's Hearts for Hospice Benefit was held on February 3rd at the Ramada Plaza and Conference Centre.
It was again a huge success, raising just over $40,000 for the Abbotsford Hospice Society.
The more than 250 attendees at this year's event were invited to "Take a Cruise for Hospice". They were
welcomed to a complimentary martini reception by the singing duo "White Chocolate", then treated to
tropical hors d'oeuvres and desserts created by Ramada's Chef Michael Traquair and his staff. Three
large gift baskets, courtesy The Gourmet Cup Foods Ltd., T Baskets and Ron Gladiuk were given away as
door prizes. Hand-made glass hearts, by Vancouver artist Robert Held, were again featured as the Hearts
for Hospice Benefit signature welcome gift. Myers, Norris, Penny LLP sponsored these this year. Live
auction prizes of golf getaways to Whistler, a landscape pond package and three multi media pieces
by local artist Linda Klippenstein got the audience excited and bidding up a storm. When that fun was
over, the Bruce James Orchestra, sponsored as well by Myers, Norris Penny LLP, played for a packed
dance floor until the wee hours of the morning.
The Pinnacle Ballroom and Foyer definitely had a nautical ambience with decor featuring fishing nets,
seashells and 10-foot-tall pier posts, but the real eye-catchers were the 20 tropical floral arrangements
that were on the dining room tables-- especially the three that adorned the special Captain's Table on the
dance floor. Guests could purchase a chance to sit at the Captain's Table, and win one of three fabulous
prizes: a $500 gift certificate from Ambassador Travel, a vacation at Club Intrawest in Panorama or a pair
of West Jet tickets. Winners were Michael Marasco, Jaime Ponte and Debbie Cockerham.
Along the glass wall of the foyer, a specially designed Tropical Lagoon was stocked with glass bottles for the event.
Guests were invited to purchase a ticket and then fish one out and see what message was contained within. Each
message divulged the winning of a prize and perhaps one of the five Grand Prizes.
Grand Prize winner of a $5,000.00 CruiseShipCenter gift certificate was Cathy Klassen. She has already made
arrangements and has chosen to embark on a first class cruise to Alaska. Other Grand Prizes for the evening
were a Golf Bag ensemble, a Sony Home Theatre, a stay at the River Rock Resort in Richmond, & a stay at the
Opus Hotel in Vancouver. These were fished out of the Lagoon by Vance Eden, Brad Wiebe, Irwin Klassen and Ed Fast,
respectively.
The Hearts for Hospice Committee also raises funds throughout the year at smaller events. A fashion show was
held at the Ramada in October, a hot dog sale was held at the Mt. Lehman IGA in September. Revenue from these
smaller events was $12, 000, making the Committee's fund-raising total $52,000.00 for this year.
Hearts for Hospice chairperson, Cindy Suffel-Marchbank, said that being in charge this year was 90% enjoyment
and 10% work. "This year's event has been a pleasure to organise and especially to attend. Our committee's
goal has always been to put the fun back into fund-raising... and I know that we have achieved that goal. When you
see a "Hearts for Hospice" sponsored event, you can bet that it will be fun!"
All proceeds from this year's fund-raising events will be given directly to the Abbotsford Hospice Society.
ENVISION FASHION FANTASY
The Hearts for Hospice Committee will be holding its third annual fund raising fashion show for the Abbotsford Hospice
Society on Tuesday, 16 October 2007, at the Ramada Plaza, in Abbotsford. Doors will open at 6:30pm and the show will last
from about 8:00 - 10:00pm. The "Envision Fashion Fantasy" evening includes a welcoming cocktail and delicious dessert buffet.
The only fund raising activity during the event will be the sale of approximately 300 balloons each offering the chance
to take home one of a huge selection of prizes. We will, of course, also have some wonderful door Prizes to hand out. This
fashion show has been a sell-out each of its first 2 years and we expect it to be one again this time. We know that our 340
tickets will sell quickly - so please plan to put your table together early. Tickets are $40.00 and tables are for 10.
As a result of last year's "Envision Financial Fashion Fantasy", our Committee was able to donate just over $11,000.00 to Hospice
and we will definitely improve upon that amount in 2007.
For more information, please contact Caroline, at 604 852-6444; or Linda, at 604 853-2925; or Bonnie, at 604 852-2456.

COME HIKE WITH US Fifth Annual National Hike for Hospice Palliative Care
On Sunday, May 6th, Abbotsford volunteers will join thousands of people representing over 90 sites across Canada, to
participate in the Fifth Annual Hike for Hospice Palliative Care. Abbotsford Hospice Society is excited to host this
year's Hike, to be held Sunday, May 6th, 2007 at Hospice House - 33134 Marshall Road. Registration is at 12:00 noon
and the Hike begins at 1:00 pm.
This is the 4th time that AHS has hosted a "Hike". In the past the Hike has taken place in a city park. This year we
will be holding an "Urban" Hike through the downtown core of the City. As an active community partner, the Abbotsford
Hospice Society would like to celebrate our growing and increasingly vibrant city while we raise much needed funds for
our public services. As well, a Hike through the downtown rather than "out in the woods" will raise awareness of Abbotsford
Hospice and the services we offer to our community.
"The Hike has three main goals. They include raising much-needed funds for hospice palliative care in our community,
raising awareness of the many issues related to hospice palliative care and recognizing the phenomenal work done by
volunteers and professionals in the field."
While the Hike is coordinated nationally, due to the generous financial support of The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation and
Bayshore Home Health, 100% of the funds raised in our community remain here. The funds raised this year by Abbotsford
Hospice Society will be used to support services offered free of charge to the dying and the bereaved in the City of
Abbotsford and surrounding areas.
According to Statistics Canada, more than 259,000 Canadians die each year, and that number is projected to increase
by 33% by 2020. Currently, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association estimates that only 25% of those who need
it will have access to hospice palliative care. The Abbotsford Hospice Society is working toward ensuring that more
Canadians, especially in our own community, receive the end-of-life care they wish for.
To support or participate in COME HIKE WITH US here's our Pledge Form [Word] or for more information...
